OVERBROOK — Stephanie Y. Ziegler, 46, Overbrook, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017. She was 46.

She was born April 28, 1971, at Topeka, the daughter of James Foote and Elaine Gustin Nichols. She grew up in the Topeka/Carbondale area, graduating from Highland Park High School with the class of 1990. She took many classes from Allen County Community College and Washburn University working towards a degree in education.

Raymond Clarence Heidebrecht

Oct. 5, 1943 – Aug. 7, 2017

OVERLAND PARK — Raymond Clarence Heidebrecht died Aug. 7, 2017, at Overland Park. He was 73.

He was born Oct. 5, 1943, at Newton. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ida; a son, George; a sister, Arlene; and a brother, Jim.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan; a son, James; two grandchildren, Kate and Alex; and many nieces and nephews. “Wildman” will be missed by his family, his community family in Melvern, and by his many friends including his best buddy, Sam.

Ross Gray

March 21, 1926 – Aug. 7, 2017

WINFIELD — Ross Gray, Topeka, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at the Veteran’s Home, Winfield. He was 91.

He was born March 21, 1926, at Lyndon, the son of Wayne and Ruth Rankin Gray. He grew up in Lyndon where he graduated from Lyndon High School in 1943. He lived in Hiawatha for a time before moving to Topeka.

Kurtis Alan Gaston

Dec. 22, 1955 – Aug. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Kurt Gaston, Osage City, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, at his home in Osage City. He was 61.

He was born Dec. 22, 1955, at Belleville, the son of Karl and Dorothy Buckley Gaston. He grew up in Ellsworth, where he learned to love small-town life, sports and the English language.

He attended the University of Kansas where he met his wife, Marcy. They were married Jan. 8, 1977, and were married for 37 years.

Hazel Smith

Died – July 30, 2017

OVERBROOK — Hazel Smith, Overbrook, died Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 95.

She married Arlie Smith in 1947. He died in 2009.

She is survived by three children, Nyla Smith, Topeka, Alan Smith and wife, Susan, Osage City, and Lana Moore and husband, Rick, Overbrook; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Jewell Jasper Huckaby Jr.

March 27, 1928 – July 16, 2017

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Jewell Huckaby, of Highland’s Ranch, Colo., Evergreen, Colo., Osage City, Robinson, and Nevada, Mo., passed peacefully into the arms of God July 16, 2017, at Mill Vista Lodge at Wind Crest Retirement Community, Highlands Ranch, Colo. He was 89.

Leland Asbury York

Aug. 26, 1926 – July 20, 2017

LOUISBURG — Leland Asbury York, Louisburg, died July 20, 2017, peacefully at Louisburg Care Center, Louisburg. He was 90.

He was born Aug. 26, 1926, at New Hampton, Mo., the son of Francis Asbury and Clara Helen Cover York. He was the middle child with three brothers, Charles, Neal and Robert and a sister Avalon.

He married the love of his life, Peggy Lou Hainline on June 12, 1949. They shared 62 wonderful years before her passing in 2011.

James Arthur Hamman

Jan. 12, 1941 – July 19, 2017

OSAGE CITY — James Arthur Hamman died Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at his home. He was 76.

He was born Jan. 12, 1941, at Emporia, the son of Marion Hamman and Bernice Jones Winter. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Emporia.

He served in the National Guard and worked for Santa Fe Railroad on the telegraph and switchboard for many years until his retirement in 1992.

He married Eda Van Horn Aug. 7, 1971, at Emporia. They would later divorce.

Robert Glynn Protheroe

Oct. 4, 1943 – July 20, 2017

EMPORIA — Robert Glynn “Swede” Protheroe died Thursday, July 20, 2017, at his home in Emporia. He was 73.

He was born Oct. 4, 1943, at Emporia, the son of Glynn D. and Evea L. Keller Protheroe. He attended Reading High School and graduated with the class of 1961. He would further his education at Clarks Business College and Kansas State Teachers College.

Warren Lee Wideman

July 26, 1948 – July 16, 2017

TOPEKA — Warren Lee Wideman, Carbondale, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 68.

He was born on July 26, 1948, at Emporia, the son of August and Alberta Lee Wideman. He grew up on a farm outside Olpe.

He attended Maydale Catholic School and the public schools in Olpe. He graduated from Olpe High School in 1966. After a few years, he moved to Topeka where he met his future wife.

He married Pamela Ferry Feb. 3, 1975, at Topeka. She survives.
