Michael L. Seyler

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Michael L. Seyler died Dec. 19, 2013, in St. Louis, Mo.

He was born Oct. 6, 1963, at Lawrence, the son of Joseph and Mary C. Seyler. He was a 1982 graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School. He grew up in Topeka and Overbrook.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1988-1992. He sailed as an electrician for the Merchant Marines from 1998-2013.

He was married to Teresita Bedrijo from 1992-1998.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Eric Allen Stinebaugh

Dec. 13, 1976 - Dec. 31, 2013

OSAGE CITY—Eric Allen Stinebaugh, Melvern, died Dec. 31, 2013, near Osage City. He was 37.

He was born Dec. 13, 1976, at Ottawa, the son of Roger and Debbie Allen Stinebaugh. He lived most of his life around the Melvern community.

He graduated from Marais des Cygnes Valley High School in 1995, where he played football and was active in 4-H and FFA. He worked as a truck driver and did mill wright work for Mid-States Materials.

Gary Jernigan

June 27, 1938 – Dec. 28, 2013

TOPEKA—Gary Jernigan, Lyndon, died Dec. 28, 2013, at a Topeka hospital. He was 75.

He was born June 27, 1938, at Topeka, the only child of Orville and Pearle Jones Jernigan. He grew up north of Dragoon Creek north of Lyndon. He had lived in Atlanta, Ga., Topeka, and then returned to Lyndon.

He graduated from Osage City High School in 1956. He attended Emporia State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1960, and his master’s degree in music in 1961.

Elton Vaughn

Died Dec. 27, 2013

Junction City—Elton G. Vaughn, 90, formerly of Osage City, passed away Friday, December 27, 2013 at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City with burial to follow at Osage City Cemetery. Family will receive friends an hour before service at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the American Legion Post 198 and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, KS 66523.

R.E. Phelps Jr.

Aug. 8, 1928 – Dec. 28, 2013

OVERBROOK—R.E. “Bud” Phelps Jr. died Dec. 28, 2013, at his home west of Overbrook. He was 85.

He was born Aug. 8, 1928, at Fredonia, the son of Robert and Marie McReynolds Phelps. He lived in California for many years before returning to the Overbrook area in 1994.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He worked as a lead man for TRW and Northrup-Grumman in California from 1957 to 1990.

He married Peggy Scott July 11, 1954, at Chanute. She survives.

Milton Carl Scheer

Feb. 10, 1930 – Dec. 23, 2013

LYNDON—Milton Carl Scheer died Dec. 23, 2013, at his home in Lyndon. He was 83.

He was born Feb. 10, 1930, at Maud, Okla., the son of David and Hazel Noe Scheer. He lived in McFarland before moving to Lyndon where he has lived for the past 36 years.

He graduated from Topeka High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1950. He worked as a painter most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Eugene Scheer.

Marilyn Vaye Davis

June 13, 1936 – Dec. 20, 2013

TOPEKA—Marilyn Vaye Davis, Topeka, died Dec. 20, 2013, at a Topeka hospital. She was 77.

She was born June 13, 1936, on a farm in rural Eskridge. She was the daughter of James Ivan Sr. and Vera Lorene McMasters Bennett. She grew up in Eskridge, and graduated from Eskridge High School in 1955.

Betty A. Thornton

Aug. 19, 1945 – Dec. 25, 2013

SCRANTON—Betty A. Thornton, Scranton, died Dec. 25, 2013. She was 67.

She was born Aug. 19, 1946, at Harvard, Ill., the daughter of Herbert and Margaret Brim Stoner.

She married William “Bill” Thornton Sr. Oct. 16, 1965. He survives of the home.

She worked as a cook at Brookside Manor, Overbrook. She was a member of Overbrook United Methodist Church. She loved playing bingo and piano.

Earl Dean Satzler

July 11, 1935 – Dec. 21, 2013

FORT SCOTT—Earl Dean Satzler, rural McCune, died Dec. 21, 2013, at Mercy Hospital, Fort Scott, KS. He was 78. He had been a resident of Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home since May 11, 2011.

He was born July 11, 1935, in Wabaunsee County, the son of Earl Everett and Dorothy Gertrude Provost Satzler. He attended schools in Harveyville, and graduated from Harveyville High School in 1953. In 1955, he attended Bartlesville Christian College and worked in Bartlesville, Okla.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Dr. Lloyd Lee Dodson

Dr. Lloyd Dodson

April 20, 1924 – Dec. 21, 2013

TOPEKA—Dr. Lloyd Lee Dodson, Topeka, died Dec. 21, 2013, peacefully in his home with his loving family by his side. He was 89.

He was born April 20, 1924, the son of Stokes and Beulah Dodson. He grew up in Topeka, having attended Lowman Hill and Randolph grade schools, Boswell Junior High, and in 1942, he graduated from Topeka High School.
