Curtis Hugh McFarlane

June 19, 1948

EMPORIA—Curtis Hugh McFarlane, Emporia, died at the age of 68.

He was born June 19, 1948, at Emporia, the son of Hugh McFarlane and Heather Curtis. He graduated from Burlingame High School.

He was in the U.S. Army where he earned several medals including a purple heart and bronze star while serving in Vietnam.

Virginia L. Martin

Dec. 18, 2016

TOPEKA—Virginia L. “Peggy” Martin died peacefully Dec. 18, 2016, at Midland Care, Topeka. She was 92.

She was cremated. A memorial service to honor her life is planned and will be announced at a later date.

Evea L. Protheroe

April 8, 1921 – Dec. 18, 2016

OSAGE CITY—Evea L. Protheroe died Dec. 18, 2016, at Osage City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 95.

She was born April 8, 1921, in the community of Peterton, just north of Osage City, the daughter of John L. and Edith B. John Keller.

She graduated from Osage City High School with the class of 1939. She received a scholarship from the College of Emporia but was unable to accept it.

Jeffery Allen Atchison

Nov. 18, 1969 – Dec. 12, 2016

TOPEKA—Jeffery Allen Atchison, Burlingame, died Dec. 12, 2016, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 47.

He was born Nov. 18, 1969, the son of Charles E. Atchison Sr., and Ila G. Mundy Atchison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffery J. Atchison; a daughter, Lacie Lynne Atchison; and a brother, Timothy Lee Atchison.

Norman Earl Wright

Oct. 9, 2016 – Dec. 12, 2016

COUNCIL GROVE—Norman Earl Wright, Osage City, died Dec. 12, 2016, at Diversicare, Council Grove. He was 88.

He was born Oct. 9, 1928, at Osage City, the son of Louis and Minnie Pearce Wright. He lived most of his life in Osage City.

Deborah Lee Greenfield

April 10, 1947 – Dec. 15, 2016

OVERBROOK—Deborah Lee Greenfield, Overbrook, died Dec. 15, 2016, in the presence of her loved ones. She was 69.

She was born April 10, 1947, at Michigan Valley, the daughter of John R. Athon and Margaret E. (Trendel) Athon. She graduated from Overbrook Rural High School with the class of 1965.

She was known as “The Lunch Lady” at Santa Fe Trail High School cafeteria for over 25 years.

Romona Alice Bartee

Oct. 7, 2016 – Dec. 14, 2016

TOPEKA—Romona Alice Bartee, Osage City, died Dec. 14, 2016, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, after a brief illness. She was 76.

She was born Oct. 7, 1940, at Burlington, the daughter of Oscar and Myrtle Kennard. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1958. She graduated from beauty school in Topeka, after high school.

She worked as a beautician for over 40 years, and enjoyed having her shop in her own home.

She was a member of the Sunflower Steppers, Red Hats, volunteered at ECAT, and hosted a Wednesday’s sewing group.

Lois I. Osborne Hannigan

March 7, 1931– Dec. 12, 2016

COTTONWOOD FALLS—Lois I. Hannigan, Cottonwood Falls, died Dec. 12, 2016, at Chase County Care and Rehabilitation Center, Cottonwood Falls. She was 85.

She was a long time resident of Miller.

She was born March 7, 1931, the daughter of William G. and Margaret Ann Nettie Bolinder Osborne, at the family farm near Admire. She graduated from Admire High School.

She married Patrick M. Hannigan March 16, 1957, at Emporia. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Vera Knisley

Jan. 15, 1912 – Dec. 10, 2016

WAVERLY—Vera Knisley died Dec. 10, 2016, at Sunset Manor, Waverly. She was 104.

She was born Jan. 15, 1912, on the family farm near New London, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick and Bettie Toft Miller. She grew up around New London, where she graduated from New London High School in 1929.

She moved to California for four years until she returned to the Burlington, Iowa, area in 1940. She had lived in and around the Topeka community from 1957 to 2008 when she moved near Melvern.

Gerald D. Garrett

Aug. 14, 1939 – Dec. 6, 2016

CARBONDALE—Gerald D. Garrett, Carbondale, opened his final gate on Dec. 6, 2016. He passed away in his sleep at home. He was 77.

He was born Aug. 14, 1939, near Wakarusa, the son of Noble Glenn and Junia Geneive Perry Garrett. He was the youngest of nine siblings.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Glenn, Rex, Floyd “Buster,” and Max Garrett and a sister, Elsie June Tucker.
