Steven Ray Kolbaba

May 24, 1955 – April 14, 2017

TOPEKA — Steven Ray Kolbaba, Osage City, died April 14, 2017, at St. Francis Health Center, Topeka. He was 61.

He was born May 24, 1955, at Emporia, the son of John Henry and Juanita M. Hogan Kolbaba.

He was a truck driver for many years. He drove for Tommy Whalen, Shears, Blacktop and for his father, J&J Hauling, until he bought his own business. He was able to do about anything he put his mind too.

He married LaRae Eller. They divorced. He married Terri Bruce. They latter divorced.

Joye May

Oct. 22, 1933 – April 13, 2017

VASSAR — Joye May died April 13, 2017, at her home near Vassar. She was 83.

She was born Oct. 22, 1933, at Dourghtay, Okla., the daughter of Thaddeus and Jessie Wilkens Gardenhire.

She lived in Topeka and on Lake Pomona near Vassar for the last 42 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Vassar United Methodist Church.

She married Gentry May, July 27, 1957, at Hugoton. He survives of the home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thaddeus and Jessie; and a sister, Jean Crabtree.

Brooke R. Kendall

Oct. 8, 1945 – March 29, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Brooke R. Kendall, Osage City, died March 29, 2017. He was 71.

He was born Oct 8, 1945, at Kansas City, Mo., the son of Rev. Robert B. and Marian L. Kendall.

He graduated from Baker University and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the aircraft carrier USS KittyHawk.

Price Wilson Speece

March 1, 1946 – April 3, 2017

TOPEKA — Price Wilson Speece, Reading, died April 3, 2017, at St. Francis Health Center, Topeka. He was 71.

He was born March 1, 1946, in Lyon County, the son of Wilson Speece and Helen Jane Christesen. He graduated from the University of Kansas.

He was a member of the U.S. Army. He served with the 101st Airborne. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marsha Speece Small.

Donald W. Kurtz

Donald W. Kurtz
Feb. 16, 1931 – April 2, 2017

AUBURN — Donald W. Kurtz, Auburn, formerly of Burlingame, died April 2, 2017, at Homestead Assisted Living. Auburn. He was 86.

He was born Feb. 16, 1931, at Downs, the son of Howard E. and Mabel H. Carey Kurtz. He graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in 1949.

He had a variety of careers including farmer, taxi driver, stone cutter, meat cutter and cooperative truck driver. He most recently retired from Hallmark Cards after 14 years in security and maintenance.

Lucienne Harold

July 24, 1963 – April 6, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Lucienne Harold died April 6, 2017, at her home in Osage City. She was 53.

She was born July 24, 1963, at San Diego, Calif., and was adopted by Ed and Leah Bergquist. She lived most of her life in the Osage City community.

She graduated from Osage City High School and attended Emporia Nursing School where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at a private medical practice, Hilltop Nursing Home in Lyndon, and the Osage Nursing Center, Osage City.

Steven X. Cross

Dec. 27, 1953 – March 29, 207

OVERBROOK — Steven X. Cross died March 29, 2017, at his home in Overbrook. He was 63.

He was a construction foreman for Frisbie Construction and then Wolf Construction. He graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School in 1972. He was a member of Grace Community Church, Crappie Master’s and Crappie Busters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John Cross and Ronnie Wilkinson.

Anna Kay Schemm

Oct. 11, 1957 – March 30, 2017

OTTAWA — After battling sustained illnesses, Anna Kay Schemm moved on to a better place. She passed away March 30, 2017, at Ottawa. She was 59.

She was born Oct. 11, 1957, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Bonna Driver Heitman and was one of four siblings. She graduated from Park Hill High School on May 22, 1975.

R. Steven White

Jan. 15, 1950 – March 27, 2017

SHAWNEE MISSION — R. Steven “Steve” White, Osage City, passed away in his sleep March 27, 2017, at the Health Care Resort of Shawnee Mission. He was 67.

He was born Jan. 15, 1950, the son of Howard M. and Marcia M. White, Ulysses. After attending Washburn University, he made his home in Osage City.

Larry Keith Swanson

March 30, 1940 – March 23, 2017

OVERBROOK — Larry Keith Swanson died March 23, 2017, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. He was 76.

He was born March 30, 1940, on the family farm near Melvern, the son of Charles A. and Elizabeth E. Dillard Swanson.
