Mary Elaine Jones

Oct. 20, 1936 – Aug. 16, 2014

KANSA CITY—Mary Elaine Tucker Jones, Overland Park, peacefully passed away Aug. 16, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House. She was 77.

She was born Oct. 20, 1936, at Barclay, the daughter of Kenneth M. and Mary Helen Sims Tucker.

She was raised in Osage City, and graduated from Osage City High School. She also lived and worked in Topeka and Leavenworth.

She married Warren R. Johnson April 29, 1958, at Osage City, and then Jerald E. Jones May 22, 1970, at Leavenworth. They preceded her in death.

Sophanna M. “Sophie” Ogliaro

July 16, 1929 – Aug. 16, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Sophanna M. “Sophie” Ogliaro died Aug. 16, 2014, at her residence in Osage City. She was 85.

Sophanna Marie Wilson was born July 16, 1929, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Walter and Bertha Durand Wilson. She graduated high school in Springdale, Ark. She moved to Osage City in 1950.

She worked as an assistant city clerk for Osage City for 40 years until her retirement in 1990.

She married Joseph “Bud” Ogliaro June 20, 1963, Osage City. He preceded her in death on May 25, 2004.

Virgil Eugene McPherson

April 11, 1932 – Aug. 16, 2014

GRANTVILLE—Virgil Eugene McPherson Sr., of the Grantville community, died Aug. 16, 2014, at his home. He was 82.

He was born April 11, 1932, the son of Wallace and Reland Pfost McPherson, at Tecumseh. He moved to Carbondale as a young child.

He attended Carbondale schools and was a member of the 1951 state championship basketball team. After graduating from Carbondale High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and was stationed in Germany. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1955 to 1961.

Rodney Wayne Loney

Oct. 23, 1959 – Aug. 14, 2014

READING—Rodney Wayne Loney died Aug. 14, 2014, at his home in Reading. He was 54.

He was born Oct. 23, 1959, at Lawrence, the son of Charles Albert and Darlene Marie Weddle Loney.

He married Nancy Ann Waters on June 24, 1980, at Overbrook. She survives of the home.

He was a member of Osage City Baptist Temple.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bobby Stoddard.

Norma Ossiander Laubach

Oct. 5, 1917 – Aug. 15, 2014

OVERBROOK—Norma Ossiander Laubach, Scranton, died Aug. 15, 2014, at an Overbrook nursing home. She was 96.

She was born Oct. 5, 1917, at Kansas City, the daughter of Adolf and Marjory Ossiander. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1958.

Virgil Smith Jr.

March 2, 1921 – Aug. 16, 2014

BERRYTON—Virgil Smith Jr., Berryton, died Aug. 16, 2014. He was 93.

He was born March 2, 1921, in Osage County, the son of Florence Anderson Smith and Virgil Smith Sr.

He was a member of Overbrook United Methodist Church. He was a farmer.

He married Ruth A. MacArthur Aug. 5, 1948, at Topeka. She preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 2012.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Lloyd Smith, Letha Smith, Wilmer Smith, Ralph Smith, Jessie Hoy, Francis deLain, Charles Smith and Arlie Smith.

Richard Weston Foster

Jan. 6, 1926 – Aug. 14, 2014

TOPEKA—Richard Weston “Bud” Foster, Carbondale, rural Overbrook, died Aug. 14, 2014, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. He was 88.

He was born Jan. 6, 1926, near Overbrook. He spent his youth in the Overbrook community graduating from Overbrook Rural High School in 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.

Upon completing his service, he met and married his sweetheart and wife of 65 years, Margaret “Peggy” Towle. They were united in marriage June 4, 1949. She survives.

Dean L. Beckman

Sept. 6, 1945 – Aug. 10, 2014

OVERBROOK—Dean L. “Jock” Beckman died Aug. 10, 2014, at his home in Overbrook. He was 68.

He was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Odell, Neb., the son of Roy and Irma Holle Beckman. He grew up in Marysville, and joined the U.S. Navy when he was only 17. He proudly served aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk until being honorably discharged in 1966.

He married Wanda Ford June 2, 1967. She survives of the home. Together they raised three children.

Barbara J. Stephens

Aug. 9, 2014

WICHITA—Barbara J. Stephens retired administrative supervisor with the U.S. Marshall Service died Aug. 9, 2014. She was 76.

She was preceded in death by her father, Woodward Norris Johnson; and a brother, Dwayne Norris Johnson.

Donald M. Langley

March 2, 1923 – Aug. 6, 2014

TOPEKA—Donald M. Langley Sr., Carbondale, died Aug. 6, 2014, at a Topeka Nursing Home. He was 91.

He was born March 2, 1923, Eskridge, the son of Late and Pearl Rowley Langley. He grew up in Eskridge and lived there until moving to Carbondale in 1965.

He graduated from Burlingame High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea. He worked in construction for many years and retired from USD 501, where he had worked in maintenance. He attended Grace Assembly Church, Burlingame.
