IOWA CITY, Iowa— Mary Frances Nicolay Ryan, Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Lyndon, died March 10, 2014. She was 94.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. May 31 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 4525 N.W. Button Rd., Topeka.

Lois Jean Kendall

Nov. 6, 1950 – May 17, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Lois Jean “Jeanie” Kendall, Osage City, died May 17, 2014. She was 63.

She was born Nov. 6, 1950, at Fowler, the daughter of the late Bernard Marvin and Alice Mae Salmon Hoffman. After graduating from Fowler High School, she attended Emporia State University and earned a degree in education.

She married Brooke Kendall Nov. 3, 2003, at Baldwin. He survives.

Leona Mae Shaffer

Sept. 1, 1923 – May 15, 2014

WICHITA—Leona Mae Shaffer, Burlingame, departed this life May 15, 2014, at Wichita, with her sons at her side. She was 90.

She was born Sept. 1, 1923, at Melvern, the daughter of Edward and Annie Knight. She attended Melvern public schools and graduated in 1941 as a honor student.

She married Ray W. Shaffer Nov. 29, 1940, at Burlington. He preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1983.

Bernice L. Price

Jan. 1, 1921 – May 16, 2014

TOPEKA—Bernice L. Price, Melvern, died May 16, 2014, at Midland Hospice House. Topeka,. She was 93.

She was born Jan. 1, 1921, at Elenton, Ga., the daughter of William and Mabel Clifton Chafin. She lived in Melvern since 1951.

She worked at different jobs through the years, but had always considered being a homemaker the most important. She was a very active member of Melvern Church of God.

She married Charles “C.A.” Price July 23, 1939, at Moultrie, Ga. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 2006.

Ruth Jean Merrifield

Sept. 24, 1934 – May 15, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Ruth Jean Fisher Merrifield, Osage City, died May 15, 2014, at her home. She was 79.

She was born Sept. 24, 1934, at Bazaar, the daughter of Tom and Inez Russell Fisher.

She had a busy life, working for the Gas Company and Cozy Café while still in high school. She was a member of the Burlingame High School Class of 1953. Soon after graduation, she moved to Topeka.

She married Duane Merrifield in September 1953. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1993.

Earl Hawkins

Oct. 5, 1918 – May 11, 2014

TOPEKA—Earl “Jack” Hawkins, Scranton, died May 11, 2014, at Midland Hospice, Topeka. He is 95.

He was born Oct. 5, 1918, at Grenola, the son of Howard and Ora Logsdon Hawkins. He lived many years in Topeka, then in Siloam Springs, Ark., and lived in Scranton for the last 19 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He worked in a flour mill in Topeka. He attended Grace Community Church, Overbrook.

He married Thelma Smith Oct. 18, 1946, at Ft. Smith, Ark. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2008.

Clifford Peter Hudson

March 26, 1943 – May 6, 2014

TOPEKA—Clifford Peter Hudson, Osage City, died May 6, 2014, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 71.

He was born March 26, 1943, at Prairie du Chien, Wis., the son of Clifford Leroy and Helen Catherine Mikel Hudson.

He had worked as a welder and mechanic on highway and heavy equipment until medical retirement in 1983.

He married Rachael Satterfield Aug. 17, 1969, at Englewood, Colo. She survives of the home. Nine years ago, they moved to Osage City from Louviers, Colo.

Wilson Duane Renyer

Aug. 21, 1933 – May 4, 2014

TOPEKA—Wilson Duane “Willie” Renyer, Wakarusa, died May 4, 2014, at Topeka. He was 80.

He was born Aug. 21, 1933, on the family farm near Auburn, the son of Elbert Lee and Blanche Dickson Renyer. He grew up in the Auburn community and graduated from Auburn High School in 1951.

Kim Michelle Cousin

Dec. 23,1960 – May 5, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Kim Michelle Cousin died May 5, 2014, at her parent’s home in Osage City. She was 53.

She was born Dec. 23, 1960, at Emporia, the daughter of Donald “Ike” Dayne and Kay Anna Curley Garland. She graduated from Osage City High School in 1979.

She worked as an pharmaceutical benefits representative for Veterans Administration in Topeka.

She married Marvin M. Cousin June 22, 1990. They divorced in 2011.

She was a member of Flint Hills Baptist Church, Osage City.
