Edward Earl Kramer

Oct. 14, 1925 – June 18. 2018

CARBONDALE — Edward Earl Kramer, Carbondale, died Monday, June 18, 2018, at his home. He was 92.

He was born Oct. 14, 1925, at Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Frank Kramer and Elna M. Hollister Kramer. He grew up in the Overbrook and Manhattan area and moved to Albuquerque, N.M. his senior year, where he graduated from High School.

He served our country during World War II in the U.S. Navy with the rank of Seaman 1st Class with the Submarine Division 61, USS Pintado. He was honorably discharged April 14, 1946.

James R. Driver

Oct. 16, 1921 – June 16, 2018

POMONA — James R. Driver, Pomona, passed away at his home Saturday, June 16, 2018. He was 96.

He was born Oct. 16, 1921, at Quenemo, the son of Roy and Hannah Windett Driver. He was the oldest of nine children. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1939.

Following high school, he went into farming with his father until he was drafted and after the service, went into partnership with his father and brother, Joe, on the family farm. He retired from farming in 2008.

Betty Jean Hanna

Oct. 28, 1941 – June 14, 2018

TOPEKA — Betty Jean Hanna, Lyndon, died Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. She was 76.

She was born Oct. 28, 1941, at Clebit, Okla., the daughter of Curtis and Thelma Needham Hinton. She lived in Lyndon since 1960.

She worked as a keypunch operator, unemployment computer room supervisor, then as a computer programmer for the State of Kansas for 23 years. She was a Sunflower Stepper and was a member of the Lyndon Salt Creek Lighthouse Assembly of God Church.

John Hagen

July 29, 1930 – June 8, 2018

OLATHE — John Hagen, Melvern, died Friday, June 8, 2018, at Olathe Hospice House, Olathe. He was 87.

He was born July 29, 1930, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of John and Beatrice Baldwin Hagen. He lived in Melvern for a number of years and was in Olathe for the last year.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of Master Sergeant after 26 years of service. He was a member of Melvern American Legion Post No. 317 and Melvern United Methodist Church.

Faye Barnwell

Dec. 28, 1938 – June 4, 2018

TOPEKA — Faye Barnwell, Topeka, died Monday, June 4, 2018, at Plaza West. She was 79.

She was born Dec. 28, 1938, the daughter of Hubert Austin and Beatrice Rebecca McClure Thornburgh. She was a homemaker.

She married James E. "Jim" Barnwell July 20, 1964, at Crossville, Tenn. He preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 1999.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, a sister and a niece.

David M. Jensen

March 10 1942 – May 31, 2018

TOPEKA — David M. “Dave” Jensen, Reading, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 76.

He was born March 10, 1942, at Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of David and Marcia Fleenor Jensen.

He married Jane Marshall June 21, 2002 at Topeka. She survives of the home.

Glen Lewis

Sept. 16, 1950 – June 2, 2018

POMONA — Glen Lewis died Saturday, June 2, 2018, at his home near Pomona. He was 67.

He was born Sept. 16, 1950, at Ottawa, the son of George and Elizabeth Neill Lewis. He grew up in Quenemo and lived there until moving to Pomona in 1986. He graduated from Quenemo High School in 1968 as valedictorian.

Alice Jane McMurdo

Nov. 13, 1926 – May 31, 2018

TOPEKA — Alice Jane McMurdo, Topeka, died Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Brewster Place. She was 91.

She was born Nov. 13, 1926, at Grand River, Iowa, the daughter of Orville C. and Sylvia Esther Davidson Bland.

She was a secretary for Bankers Life and Casualty Company for 25 years. She and her husband enjoyed camping.

She married Glenn E. "Red" McMurdo July 27, 1957, at Topeka. He preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1997.

Rawlin William Sowell

May 9, 1943 - May 16, 2018

WOODLAND PARK, Col. - Rawlin William Sowell died May 16, 2018, at his home in Woodland Park, Colo. He was 75.

He was born May 9, 1943, the son of Elwood and Edna Haufler Sowell. He attended an one-room schoolhouse at Vassar and graduated from Lyndon High School in 1961.

He moved to Colorado after graduation. He became a police officer for the Woodland Park Police Department. He retired with 30 years of service.

Eleanor Leon Phelon Smith

Jan. 27, 1915 – May 25, 2018

OVERBROOK — Eleanor Leon Phelon Smith, Scranton, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 103.

She was born Jan. 27, 1915, the daughter of Clyde Roy and Olive Elizabeth Thompson Phelon.

Before her marriage, she worked as a childcare provider, telephone operator and schoolteacher.

She married Walter J. Smith Sept. 3,1938. He preceded her in death in 2008.
